Louise Erdrich was born in Little Falls, Minnesota and is the eldest son of Ralph and Rita Erdrich. Her father is a German-American, her mother is an Ojibwe, and she was the chairman of the Chippewa tribe in Turtle Hill. Erdrich has six siblings, including writers Lise and Heidi. When Erdrich started writing stories as a child, her father encouraged her by paying her a penny for each story she completed. Her father served in the National Guard and wrote to her regularly when he was out. Erdrich described her father as her greatest literary influence, noting that the letters her mother and father wrote to her inspired most of her writing. Erdrich was a member of the first co-educational course at Dartmouth College in 1972. There she met Michael Dorris, director of the college’s Native American Research Program. Erdrich took a course taught by Professor Dorris, which inspired her to seriously study her Native American heritage, which had a huge impact on her writing. She graduated with an A.B. degree in 1976. She studied in English and received a master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1979. Erdrich published her earliest poems at Johns Hopkins University, and after graduating as a resident writer in Dartmouth.
