Cy Twombly grew up in Lexington, Virginia. He is the son of a professional baseball player, Cy Twombly, Sr. He played for the Chicago White Sox in a short career. After the legendary pitcher Cy Young, both were nicknamed “Cy.” As a child, Cy Twombly practiced art with his family’s kits ordered from the Sears Roebuck catalog. He started his art class at the age of 12. His mentor was painter Pierre Dora, a Catalan artist who fled Spain during the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s. After graduating from high school, Twombly studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Boston, Washington and Lee. In 1950 he began studying at the New York Art Students League, where he met the artist Robert Rauschenberg. These two people have become lifelong friends. Encouraged by Rauschenberg, Twombly studied at the now-defunct Montenegro College in North Carolina in 1951 and most of 1952, including artists such as Franz Kline, Robert Motherwell and Ben Shahn. Klein’s black and white abstract expressionist paintings particularly affected Twombly’s early work. Twombly’s first solo exhibition was held in 1951 at the Samuel M. Kootz Gallery in New York. Funded by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Cy Twombly traveled to Africa and Europe in 1952. Robert Rauschenberg accompanied him. When Twombly returned to the United States in 1953, Twombly and Rauschenberg held a very ugly two-person performance in New York City, and the guest commentary was removed to avoid negative and hostile reactions to the show. In 1953 and 1954, Cy Twombly served in the US Army as a cryptographer who deciphered coded communications. On the weekend, he experimented with surrealistic automatic painting techniques and adapted it to create a way to paint in the dark. The result is that abstract forms and curves become key elements of late painting. Cy Twombly “College (1955)” at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, USA. Robert Alexander / Getty
From 1955 to 1959, Twombly became a famous New York artist, working with Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns. During this time, his scribbled writing on white canvas gradually evolved. His work has become simpler in terms of form and monotone. In the late 1950s, his work appeared on a dark canvas, which looked like white lines on the surface.
